Job Description:  POSITION SUMMARY: The Geriatric Nursing Assistant Specialist performs various resident care activities and related nonprofessional services essential to caring for personal needs and comfort of residents. His/her function may not exceed Standards of Practice as accorded by Certification. In addition, the Geriatric Nursing Assistant Specialist assists professional nursing staff by performing in a leadership role for the CNA staff and performing assigned routine duties in caring for residents. He/she is supervised by a professionally trained nurse.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Handles and serves residents in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort, adhering to instructions issued by the nursing supervisor and or charge nurse to establish shift routines;
2. Performs duties in accordance with established methods and techniques and in conformance with recognized standards;
3. Provides maximum resident care services within limits defined by delegated tasks;
4. Assumes responsibility for varied resident care duties as assigned by charge nurse to include admitting, discharging, transferring and caring for the resident's personal belongings and assisting the professional nurse in performing resident treatments;
5. Bathes the resident in bed, tub or shower; combs hair, cleans and cuts fingernails and gives shampoos;
6. Makes both occupied and unoccupied beds;
7. Positions residents in correct body alignment in and out of bed and applies safety measures under the direction of the charge nurse;
8. Accompanies residents when transported outside nursing center for appointments as needed;
9. Assists the residents in and out of bed, in walking and transporting residents throughout the nursing center via wheelchair, geri-chair or stretcher;
10. Assists the charge nurse during the resident admission assessment;
11. Participates in the formulation and follow through of the resident's nursing care plan;
12. Takes and records weights, blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and respirations;
13. Gives various skin care treatments; as permitted by state regulation
14. Applies simple clean dressings and applies slings, stockings and support bandages, under direction of the licensed nurse; as permitted by state regulation.
15. Feeds residents, assists all residents with their meals and provides in between meal nourishment, as well as providing fresh ice and water to the resident's bedside;
16. Keeps records of resident's oral intake and output;
17. Answers resident's call light or bell, delivers messages, administers bedpans and urinals, cleans areas of spillage, or accidents caused by the resident;
18. Uses Standard Precautions when caring for residents;
19. Provides care, as needed, for residents who require contact and/or droplet precautions;
20. Participates in the orientation of new nursing assistants;
22. Provides direct care to more acutely ill residents on the unit as directed by the supervisor;
22. Reports any/all changes in resident's condition, any family concerns and resident's complaints to charge nurse and/or supervisor;
23. Collects and bags soiled linen and delivers to dirty linen area; if assigned, washes and dries items in domestic washer/dryer;
24. Obtains clean linens and supplies from supply areas as directed, cleans utility rooms, kitchen areas and all other nursing areas, as assigned;
25. Cleans resident equipment;
26. Receives and escorts visitors, collects charts, records and reports;
27. Transfers resident's belongings and equipment as directed, and assists with postmortem care;
28. Puts Resident Service First: Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals' needs and rights;
29. Performs other duties as requested.
30. In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the GNAS may be asked to perform additional tasks/responsibilities, which may include, but are not limited to the following:
30.1 Mentors and orients CNA’s and provides routine and regular feedback on their progress and input into peer evaluations.
30.2 Interviews potential CNA’s and makes recommendations to administration regarding potential hires.
30.3 Participates in Resident At Risk meetings (Weight, Falls, Skin, Behaviors, and Restraints ECT) on a regular and routine basis.
30.4 Participates in QI activities on a routine and regular basis.
30.5 Leads or takes an active role in the Center’s key clinical care processes (i.e. hydration, weight management, and nutrition support activities, fall prevention, Pressure Ulcer prevention, Pain management, Restorative programs etc.)
30.5 Provides in-services to staff in collaboration with staff development and/or unit leadership.
30.6 Functions as a team leader among CNA’s (making CNA assignment, providing shift report etc.)
30.7 Participates in the care plan meetings and other care plan activities on a routine and regular basis.
30.8 Oversees CNA related documentation by updating Care Cards, auditing flowsheet documentation, auditing I &O & meal % documentation etc.
30.9 Provides communication to CNA & other unit staff regarding outcomes of Care Plan meetings, Resident At Risk meetings, and QI meetings.
Qualifications: SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. A minimum of a high school education or high school equivalency diploma is preferred for this position.
2. It is mandatory that the candidate is able to read, write and understand the English language. The candidate must also be a graduate of the Genesis Nursing Assistant Specialist program. Attends all mandatory programs and pursues other learning opportunities related to work assignments
3. A Geriatric Nursing Assistant Specialist must have successfully completed a state approved certified nursing assistant program.
4. Attends all mandatory programs and pursues other learning opportunities related to work assignments.
